Project challenges
Startup idea
Create an application that can convey the atmosphere of fortune telling on the runes. So that the user can plunge into the Middle Ages through musical and visual accompaniment.
Designer task
Develop a functionally user-friendly interface using suitable graphics, music and animation.
My role in each phase

Discovery

  • Research – study of materiel, what layouts exist, study of the visual part and traditions
  • Competitor Analysis – defining features, interaction mechanics and solutions
  • Jobs to Be Done

Define

  • Informational Architecture
  • User Flows
  • Wireframing

Develop

  • Logo
  • UI concept, Design
  • Mockups
  • Hi-fi prototype

Support

  • Deliver mockups, source files and assets ready for implementation
Highlights
Discovery
At the stage of studying the materiel:
  • searched for information about Scandinavian traditions, runes and the meanings of their layouts,
  • studied competitors for IOS and Android platforms,
  • used the Jobs to be Done framework to correctly understand user motivation and identify competitors, since the application is aimed at a very wide audience.
Define
At this stage, together with the business analyst, we have designed the information architecture of the application:
  • created a Mind map for MVP in Miro,
  • for each feature, we worked out the User flow with low-detailed wireframes.
Visual design
I made a moodboard based on the client's requirements and desires.
The task was to use natural materials in the design from which the runes were created in ancient times (wood, stone, animal skin for the background). I offered 6 color options, of which the customer settled on a light and dark theme.
Conceptual design
For the final choice of the color scheme, I have developed 2 application concepts. A dark theme was chosen from them. The next step was:
  • development of a clickable Hi-Fi prototype based on a dark theme,
  • we tested a prototype with real users and got feedback. This allowed us to improve the design and make changes to existing controversial issues.
Develop
At this stage of work on the project:
  • developed a logo in the form of a rune stave,
  • made final mockups of the application for IOS and Android,
  • developed a design system,
  • in Photoshop, I drew 43 runes that differ from each other in shape and texture,
  • designed the pictures of runes into sprites, for ease of use by developers.
Support
During the layout, front-end developers needed to adapt the design to the small screen sizes of iOS and Android.
We came to the correct design of the application through active communication.

Challenges
  • Creation of graphic content. Since the application is fashionable and was created to immerse the user in the Scandinavian culture, it was necessary to draw the main content in Photoshop.
  • Creation of a design system based on design tokens.
Solution

Thanks to the insights from the research phase, I was able to make clear suggestions for the first design iteration. Using prototype at the design concept stage, we were able to test the application on users. And then I made changes to the final mockups.
